Terry Collins confirmed today that Steven Matz will be the Game 4 starter on Tuesday and that if necessary, Jacob deGrom will be the Game 5 starter. This isn’t earth-shattering news, especially given the dominance of deGrom in Friday night’s win, but it is the final stamp of approval that Matz is completely healthy and ready to go on Tuesday.
Matz hasn’t pitched in a major league game since September 24 when he went five-and-two-thirds, gave up three runs on 10 hits, and struck out eight. After that, he felt discomfort after sleeping on his back weirdly and missed the rest of the regular season. However, the Mets were reassured by Matz’s successful simulated game last Thursday, when he threw 80 pitches and kept his velocity consistent the whole time while feeling no pain.
Matt Harvey was asked about a possible Game 5 as well and he said that he would "love to" be in relief, should the series get to that point. But hopefully, with the help of Harvey, it never has to.
