The Mets got a taste of revenge for Chase Utley's wipeout of Ruben Tejada, crushing the Dodgers 13-7 in the first ever postseason game at Citi Field.
Despite the lopsided final score, it wasn't always a laugher for our heroes. The Dodgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Matt Harvey. Yasmani Grandal singled with the based loaded and all three runs scored, with some help from a Curtis Granderson throwing error. The Dodgers' lead was fleeting, however, as the Mets put up a four-spot in the bottom half of the frame. Travis d'Arnaud singled home Yoenis Cespedes, and a few batters later Granderson atoned for his miscue with a bases-loaded double, putting the Mets up 4-3.
The fun continued in the third inning, when d'Arnaud smashed a two-run home run off Brett Anderson. TdA had struggled in the first two games in the series, so it was nice to see him bust out (he went 3-for-4 on the night). Cespedes provided the main event in the fourth inning, a gargantuan three-run blast into the second deck in left field to put the Mets up 10-3. This was plenty of run support for Harvey, who was not at his sharpest but battled through five innings, striking out seven and walking two.
Oh, and the Mets added three more runs in the seventh inning, capped by a two-run double from Granderson that just missed leaving the park. The Mets' side of the box score was dense with hits, walks, and RBIs. A Howie Kendrick three-run homer off Erik Goeddel in the ninth inning made the game pointlessly closer.
"We-want-Ut-ley!" and we want to clinch Tuesday night against Clayton Kershaw.
