Matt Harvey and the Mets came out strong in Game 1 of the NLCS, defeating the Cubs 4-2. Daniel Murphy hit another home run, this time off of Jon Lester. Travis d'Arnaud hit a home run of his own, and Curtis Granderson drove in two runs with a single and a sac fly. Harvey pitched four perfect innings before hitting Anthony Rizzo and allowing a run in the fifth.
Though he certainly got lucky with some hard hit balls right at infielders, Harvey pitched well through 7.2 innings before exiting after an absolute bomb from Kyle Schwarber in the eighth. Jeurys Familia entered, walked Kris Bryant, then induced a ground out from Rizzo to escape the eighth. Familia allowed a two-out single to Miguel Montero in the ninth followed by a hard-hit ball to Tommy La Stella, but Murphy came up big again with a diving stop to end the game.
Historically, teams that win the first game of a seven-game series have a 63.4% chance of winning the series, so the Mets are certainly off to a good start. Hopefully Noah Syndergaard can continue to hold the Cubs' powerful bats in check tomorrow in Game 2.
