Meet the Mets

General Manager Sandy Alderson is battling a treatable form of cancer and will miss the Winter Meetings next week. Alderson is scheduled to undergo 8-12 weeks of chemotherapy. The Mets' GM has plenty of strong qualities that will help him fight the disease.

Reports are that Ben Zobrist was in the area with Mets brass on Wednesday checking out Westchester and Connecticut, which seems like a pretty good sign. An even better sign is that the Mets are now willing to go four years for the infielder.

Marc Carig reports that the Mets are looking at outfielders Denard Span and Gerardo Parra in addition to Zobrist. They've also monitored Dexter Fowler, though their interest has cooled there. Even with this interest, the Mets say they aren't planning to move Curtis Granderson from the leadoff spot. Carig's report also mentions recently non-tendered reliever Steve Cishek as a potential target.

Bob Geren left the Mets due to family issues. Tim Teufel is among the primary candidates to take over Geren's role on the bench.

Coca-Cola has officially replaced Pepsi as a Mets sponsor, which means they'll get the right field porch. I wonder what they'll call it...

The Mets shared some insane Steven Matz stats on their Tumblr page, which is interesting in that I had no clue the Mets had a Tumblr page.

Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki will get some chances to play other positions during spring training in an effort to get them at bats and increase their versatility.

Zack Wheeler will get on a mound soon after New Year's and is eyeing a June or July return. Hooray!

2016 is the 30th anniversary of the 1986 World Series championship squad and the team is working on the plans to honor them during the season.

Around the NL East

Dinger champion of the world Barry Bonds is back in Major League Baseball as the Marlins' hitting coach. It'll be certainly interesting to see how the normally prickly Bonds meshes with Jeffrey Loria over the next year.

Oliver Perez is back in the National League East, signing a two-year deal with the Nationals. Hopefully the Mets use him as batting practice.

Somehow the Braves are one of the finalists for Darren O'Day, along with the Nationals and Orioles. Oooookay.

Around the Majors

Surprise! Zack Greinke signed a 6-year deal with the Diamondbacks in a shocker last night.

David Price was introduced by the Red Sox yesterday and will wear number 24.

John Lackey and the Cubs agreed on a two-year contract.

The starting pitching market is already thinning out but there's another player being added to that list in Hiroshima Carp righthander Kenta Maeda.

This Date In Mets History

Happy birthday to beloved former Mets outfielder Cliff Floyd, who turns 43 today!

Yesterday At AA

James Kannengieser revealed The Piazza for Best Position Player, which was obviously Curtis Granderson.

We made you remember John Mayberry Jr's stint with the Mets. We are very sorry.
