Mets trade rumors: Mets open to trading Jon Niese

The team isn't actively shopping Niese but says it would listen to offers.

The Mets are reportedly open to trade talks regarding pitcher Jon Niese. According to Matt Ehalt of The Record, they're not actively shopping the 29-year-old left-hander, but say they "would listen" to offers. Niese made his major league debut with the Mets in 2008. He had a 4.13 ERA in 33 appearances, 29 of which were starts, in the 2015 regular season. In his seven-year major league career, he has a 3.91 ERA.

If the Mets were to trade Niese, they would have a vacancy in their rotation behind Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz. The team mentioned Rafael Montero, who missed much of 2015 with shoulder soreness, as a potential replacement, and Zack Wheeler is due to return from Tommy John surgery mid-season.

During the Mets' playoff run, Niese pitched exclusively out of the bullpen. He threw 5.1 innings in the postseason, struck out six, walked one, and had a 5.06 ERA.
