Mets free agency: Ben Zobrist decision is coming soon

New, comments

Several teams are courting the free agent, who will reportedly make a decision during this week's meetings.

The Mets have been courting free agent Ben Zobrist recently, and now he is close to making a decision on where he'll sign. The Nationals and Giants have also been in talks with him, with the Dodgers surfacing as a possible fourth team interested. Given the momentum of talks with the other three teams, though, it's suspected that the Dodgers would struggle to win him over in this late stage.

Zobrist, who hit .276 with a .359 on-base percentage in 2015, is strong both at the plate and in the field, and he contributed to the Royals' win against the Mets in the World Series.

The Mets would start Zobrist at second base, his preferred position, and would be open to a four-year contract despite the fact that he'll be 35 in May. Assistant GM Ricco said the Mets were not overly concerned with Zobrist's age because they spoke extensively about his training regimen and diet during their meetings. Ricco was also careful to note that they won't overspend for Zobrist or any other player.
