Meet the Mets

Jacob deGrom was excellent yesterday, tossing 5 shutout innings and striking out six, while Johnny Monell's 3-run home run in the 8th put the Mets up for good. After the game, the Mets made 7 cuts from spring camp including Dilson Herrera.

Sandy Alderson defended the Mets' handling of Zack Wheeler. With Wheeler done for the year, Matt Harvey is ready to put the Mets' rotation on his shoulders this year. Wheeler's injury stinks and changes the composition of the Mets' rotation but does it have to mean anything? One thing it could mean: a bullpen spot might open up for Rafael Montero.

Jeurys Familia broke out last season. What does he need to do to repeat or even improve on it? Speaking of the bullpen, Vic Black resumed throwing yesterday. Josh Edgin had his surgery yesterday and is targeting Opening Day 2016 for his return.

Dillon Gee is back in the Mets' rotation but conflict appears to be following him around.

What are the expectations for Lucas Duda in 2015?

Around the NL East

Shelby Miller went over to the Braves in the Jason Heyward trade. What can they expect from the young righty?

Phillies right hander Jerome Williams is hurt. Jeez, remember when they had Halladay, Lee, Hamels, and Oswalt? That seems like ages ago.

Anthony Rendon's "very mild MCL sprain" has taken away over a week of ballgames from the Nationals' third baseman.

Jeffrey Loria says he wants to build around his current Marlins team and definitely won't blow things up, after which he offered shares in the Brooklyn Bridge and a unicorn farm to the Marlins beat.

Around the Majors

Who is the most coveted player in Major League Baseball? Sorry but if you're not picking Mike Trout, you fail.

Baseball teams should move to six-man rotations, writes Eno Sarris at Sports on Earth.

Ian Ferguson was a prospect on the cusp of a big league career with the Royals a decade ago before his struggles with anxiety took over.

Scott Boras is not happy that the Cubs might send Kris Bryant back to Triple-A despite him clearly being big league ready just to save a few bucks by playing around with his service time.
