Mets spring training recap: Mets fall to Nationals late

New, comments

Despite falling 5-4 to the Nationals Thursday, the Mets showed why they will not fly under the radar in the NL East this season.

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets fell to the Nationals 5-4 in a spring training game this evening in Florida. Though spring training pitching matchups often go overlooked, Bartolo Colon and Max Scherzer mustered up more of a conversation than usual, as Colon outdueled Scherzer, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out two in two innings.

Newly-acquired John Mayberry Jr. made an immediate impact with a home run to left field in his first spring at-bat as a Met. Mayberry's homer was the only run Scherzer gave up, who allowed two hits in two innings of work.  Mayberry went 2-for-2 with a walk in the game. The Mets' three-run third inning started with a two-run shot from Eric Campbell. Anthony Recker tacked on a run with a single later in the inning.

A Kila Ka'aihue home run late in the game eventually defeated the Mets, though the team has a lot to look forward tomorrow with Matt Harvey making his first spring outing.
