Mets spring training recap: Red Sox 6, Mets 3—Lots of walks

New, comments

Mets pitchers issued a bunch of walks in the spring loss.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets hosted the Red Sox this afternoon in Port St. Lucie and lost score. Although the team got on the board first with a run in the second inning, Boston scored twice in the third inning. The most the Mets did after that was tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. If there was a theme for the game, it was walks. Mets pitchers walked nine Red Sox while striking out only three.

Some notes:

  • Wilmer Flores made the routine plays at shortstop and one nifty one—a diving catch.
  • After Niese threw two-and-two-thirds innings and allowed two runs, the rest of the team's pitchers generally struggled. Niese issued just one of the walks in the game, and each of the other pitchers through the eighth inning—Tyler Pill, Hansel Robles, Cory Mazzoni, Akeel Morris, and Cody Satterwhite—walked at least one. Gabriel Ynoa pitched the ninth and did not issue a walk, though he did get called for a balk.
  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 2-for-3 and scored a couple of runs.
  • Juan Lagares went 2-for-4 and made playing center field look easy, as he usually does.
  • Gavin Cecchini saw some time at short in the game and made an error, though it was ultimately harmless—even in the context of it being a spring training game and all.
