Mets are off to the best start in franchise history, tied with the 1986 and 2006 teams

The Mets' 10-3 record is tied for the best start in franchise history.

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

By now you've probably heard that the Mets' 10-3 start is tied for the best mark in franchise history. They've won ten of their first thirteen games twice before: in 1986 and 2006. Those two years are key: 1986 was, of course, the club's last world championship team, while 2006 was the last time they made the postseason.

So what should we make of this Mets team and their quest to end a nearly decade-long streak out of the playoffs? Let's take a look at the teams they played to get to 10-3 in the above-mentioned years, as well as how each team fared down the stretch.

1986 (108-54, Won World Series)

Philadelphia Phillies W 5-2, 3-2 and 8-0 86-75 No
Pittsburgh Pirates W 6-5 and 7-1 64-98 No
@ St. Louis Cardinals W 5-4 (10), 9-0 and 4-3 79-82 No

2006 (97-65, Lost NLCS)
Team Result(s) Final Record Playoffs?

Milwaukee Brewers W 4-3, L 8-2, W 9-3 75-87 No
Atlanta Braves W 4-3; L 1-7 79-83 No

Here's what they've done this year and the teams they've played to get to where they are now.

2015
Team Result(s) Opponent's Record
(as of 4/20/15)
Opponent's 2014 Record
@ Washington Nationals W 3-1, L 1-2, W 6-3 6-7 96-66 (lost in NLDS)
@ Atlanta Braves L 5-3 and 5-3; W 4-3 8-4 79-83 (no playoffs)
Philadelphia Phillies W 2-0, 6-5 and 6-1 4-9 73-89 (no playoffs)
Miami Marlins W 7-5, 4-1, 5-4 and 7-6 3-10 77-85 (no playoffs)

Does this guarantee a championship, or—at the very least—a playoff appearance? Certainly not. We're only thirteen games in with 149 games to go. With so many other determining factors—and injuries mounting—things can, and will, change. But it's still good to see the Mets in a position that they haven't been in some time.
