Final score: Mets 3, Nationals 1—Love the Mets!

Bartolo Colon was excellent, and the Mets came through with a couple of big hits on Opening Day.

H.Darr Beiser-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets started the 2015 season on the right foot, as they beat the Nationals 3-1 in Washington this afternoon. Bartolo Colon was excellent and gave up just one run on a solo home run by Bryce Harper in six innings of work. The veteran struck out eight and walked just one in his outing.

Max Scherzer was pretty great against the Mets, too, but was done in by a couple of Ian Desmond errors. The first came in the sixth on a pop fly to right-center that should have ended the inning but instead led to Lucas Duda driving in two runs with the Mets' first hit of the game. In the seventh, Juan Lagares reached on a throwing error by Desmond and was driven in by a Travis d'Arnaud triple.

The Mets' bullpen was very good, too. Carlos Torres retired the side in order in the seventh, Jeurys Familia looked incredible in the eighth, and Jerry Blevins and Buddy Carlyle combined for a scoreless ninth—unfortunately because Jenrry Mejia was unavailable with apparent elbow soreness.
