After discovering on this morning that closer Jenrry Mejia did not have any structural damage to his elbow, the New York Mets have decided to put him on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 5. The Mets announced that Mejia wil not be pitching competitively for at least 10 days.
The team has not yet announced who will be closing games in Mejia's absence, but all signs point to Jeurys Familia, who exploded on to the scene last year and thrived in his role as the eighth inning man. In 77.1 innings of work, Familia had a 2.21 ERA and 3.07 FIP in 2014.
The Mets will call up right-handed 26-year-old Erik Goeddel from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the hole in the team's eight-man bullpen. In 63.2 innings pitching out of the Vegas bullpen last year, Goeddel had a 5.37 ERA. He got a brief stint in the big leagues late last season, though, and had a 2.70 ERA in 6.2 innings for the Mets. Goeddel is also already on the Mets' 40-man roster.
