Final Score: Mets 7, Padres 0—deGrom and offense deGrominate Padres

Both Daniel Murphy and Ruben Tejada had big nights at the plate to compliment their starter's brilliant performance.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Three years ago, Johan Santana gave Mets fans a gift they had waited fifty years to receive. Tonight, Jacob deGrom almost did him one better and led the Mets to a 7-0 victory over the Padres tonight in San Diego.

deGrom was brilliant. There was talk of something being wrong with his hip over the course of his work tonight, but the result was everything one could possibly wish for. He was perfect through the first five innings and faced the minimum amount of batters through seven-and-two-thirds. Though he did not answer the bell in the ninth, he pitched eight shutout innings and struck out eight while allowing only two hits.

As for the Mets' offense, Ruben Tejada and Daniel Murphy proved deadly at the plate tonight versus Padres starter Andrew Cashner. The former was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and the latter was 4-for-5 and a triple short of the cycle. After scoring the Mets' first and second runs in the top of the first, the tandem was also responsible for the Amazins' third and fourth runs thanks to Murph's two-run homer in the top of the fifth. Wilmer Flores, Juan Lagares, and Darrell Ceciliani also drove in runs in what turned out to be a laugher in San Diego.
