The Mets lost a particularly frustrating game on Friday night in Atlanta. Jacob deGrom threw seven scoreless innings before giving up a leadoff double to Andrelton Simmons in the eighth. The Mets were up 1-0 at the time via a Michael Cuddyer single in the sixth.
After Simmons was sac bunted over to third, the Mets had the infield in, and deGrom got a ground ball to short from Pedro Ciriaco. But Wilmer Flores took too long to look Simmons back and throw to first and failed to retire Ciriaco. Terry Collins chose to pull deGrom in favor of Sean Gilmartin at that point, and Gilmartin gave up a two run double to the first man he faced. It took two more relief pitchers to get out of that inning, but the Mets failed to score in the ninth.
