Even as currently constituted, the Mets are probably better hitters than this. Unfortunately, they haven’t shown that at all over the past six games, all of which have been losses. Nearly the entire team has slumped at the same time, a rarity even for a team missing several of its regulars.
So Jon Niese threw six innings against the Brewers last night and gave up two runs. The Mets only scored two, however, and the Brewers got one run against the Mets’ bullpen that was enough to win the game.
Milwaukee scored first on an Adam Lind single in the first inning and threatened to do more with the bases loaded and two outs before Niese induced a ground out from Gerardo Parra to get out of that jam. Curtis Granderson hit a solo home run in the third to tie the game, and in the fourth, Wilmer Flores walked, advanced to second on a ground out, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Kevin Plawecki sacrifice fly to center. The Mets only had two baserunners through the rest of the game.
Niese loaded the bases in the sixth with nobody out but caught a break when Jean Segura hit a sacrifice fly to score the tying run but the Brewers’ runner at second base apparently assumed Juan Lagares would throw home and got thrown out at third base by a wide margin. That plus a ground out got Niese through the inning.
But the seventh inning did the Mets in. Hansel Robles walked Carlos Gomez with one out, and Sean Gilmartin was brought in to face Adam Lind, who doubled down the third base line. Even with Gomez’s speed, he would have had to stop at third base on the play, but Michael Cuddyer misplayed the ball as it bounced off the base of the wall in foul territory in shallow left field. It went through him, and Gomez scored. Neither team scored again, and the Mets lost for the sixth straight time.
