Jacob deGrom was once again spectacular this afternoon, the Mets scratched out just enough offense despite struggling again with runners on base, and Jeurys Familia worked a perfect ninth in his first appearance since his groin strain, as the Mets prevailed for the first time in eight tries.
deGrom went 8 innings, allowing only 4 hits without walking anyone, while striking out 7, and scored an insurance run himself after smacking a base hit in the seventh.
The Mets overcame a rough day for the umpires, as two runners were called out on the basepaths on highly questionable calls. Having already used his challenge unsuccessfully on a play where Michael Cuddyer was called out at the plate, Terry Collins was thrown out of the game arguing a steal attempt by Darrell Ceciliani in the fourth inning where Ceciliani was clearly safe by a wide margin. An umpire-initiated review in the seventh inning reversed a rally-creating double for the Brewers to a foul ball, and deGrom then worked around the only scoring threat he would face without incident.
The offense finally broke through as Wilmer Flores' sixth inning double scored Cuddyer on what would have been another close play at the plate if Shane Peterson's throw didn't sail over the head of the catcher. Lucas Duda got a gift RBI the next inning when Will Smith flubbed a dribbler back to the box and it kicked off his shoe. Curtis Granderson had the only multi-hit day, going 3-for-5. The Mets collected 10 hits total, but Flores' key double was the only extra-base hit.
The Mets now return home to face Cincinnati for a three game set, and they do so with a .500 record while sitting three games behind the division-leading Nationals.
