It's a nickname that is perhaps a little tired at this point, but Captain Kirk Nieuwenhuis earned his yellow shirt today as he became the first Met to hit three home runs in a game at home en route to a 5-3 Mets win over the Diamondbacks. Nieuwenhuis is the first Met to hit three home runs in a game—anywhere—since Ike Davis did it in 2012 against the Diamondbacks.
Daniel Murphy also jumped in on the home run barrage, hitting his fifth homer of the season. After going nine games without a home run, the Mets have hit in one, two, three, and now four home runs in their last four games.
Jon Niese pitched six-and-two-thirds innings and allowed three runs to get the win and continues his streak of strong performances. Jenrry Mejia made his season debut and recorded the last out of the seventh before Bobby Parnell and Jeurys Familia each pitched a scoreless inning to secure a sweep of the Diamondbacks. With the win, the Mets have won seven of their last nine and are in the thick of the playoff race going into the All-Star break.
