Final Score: Mets 3, Cardinals 1—It took eighteen innings

In one of the longest baseball games of the year, the Mets defeated the Cardinals.

Scott Kane-USA TODAY Sports

It took eighteen innings, but the Mets beat the Cardinals today. Neither the Mets nor Cardinals scored until the Mets plated one run in the top of the thirteenth inning. St. Louis scored one run in the bottom of that inning to tie the game. And neither team scored again until the Mets pushed across a couple of runs in the eighteenth with a Ruben Tejada sacrifice fly and a successful suicide squeeze by Eric Campbell.

Before all that, Jon Niese pitched seven-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. And with the Nationals' loss today, the Mets are just two games out of first place in the National League East.
