The Mets have come to terms with international free agent shortstop Gregory Guerrero, who is ranked sixth on Baseball America's international prospects list.
Guerrero, 16, is the nephew of Vladamir Guerrero, the cousin of top international prospect Vladamir Guerrero Jr., and the younger brother of Jose Guerrero, who was signed by the Mets last season.
Gregory has a smooth swing from the right side that generates above-average raw power. The ball jumps off his bat, but because of his fluid, loose swing, he profiles more as a player who will hit for average rather than hitting for power right now, though he should tap into more power as he matures.
Defensively, Gregory has a strong arm and quick feet. He is a fluid defender at short and makes plays look easy. At 5'11", 175 lbs, there is some concern that he may fill in and grow off of shortstop, moving to third base instead.
Groegory is a graduate of the Guerrero Academy in the Dominican Republic, where he was trained by his uncle, Wilton Guerrero.
