Mets pitcher Rafael Montero threw three scoreless innings in a rehab outing today for the rookie-ball Gulf Coast League Mets. Montero has been out since April 28 with rotator cuff inflammation, started his rehab assignment on July 14 with a scoreless inning for the GCL Mets.
In ten innings with the Mets earlier this season, Montero was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 10 innings. He appeared four times in relief before making a spot start against the Marlins. After that start, his rotator cuff issue arose, resulting in a tripe to the disabled list and a fairly long absence.
Although it will take some time for Montero to be ready to return to the big leagues, the Mets have said that they will once again use a spot starter from time to time to keep their young pitchers' innings down through the remainder of the season. Provided he can recover, Montero should be one of the candidates for those spot starts.
