Statistically, Jacob deGrom on par with Zack Greinke

Zack Greinke is having one of the greatest seasons of any pitcher since Bob Gibson's 1968 season. The Dodgers ace, who just had his streak of 45.2 consecutive scoreless innings snapped by the Mets on Sunday, is 9-2 with an unreal 1.37 ERA this season. During this impeccable streak, all of the baseball world's attention has turned to Greinke. He tossed six consecutive scoreless starts going into Sunday's game, and leads all of baseball with eight such outings this season.

Right below Greinke in that category is Jacob deGrom, who recorded his seventh scoreless outing yesterday.

The 27-year-old outdueled Greinke, tossing 7.2 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out eight Dodgers in a no-decision. It was possibly deGrom's most dominant outing of the year, as he continues to flourish on the mound in his second big league season. Although he has not been quite as dominant as Greinke this year, he is statistically on par with him in just about every major category.

deGrom's 2.05 ERA is second to Greinke's amongst all major league pitchers, and his 0.88 WHIP trails just Greinke and Max Scherzer's mark of 0.83 for the big-league lead. The Mets' ace has more strikeouts (128) than Greinke (120) and a slightly lower FIP. deGrom's 2.65 FIP is fifth-best in all of baseball while Greinke's 2.73 mark ranks seventh. Throw in the fact that deGrom got the better of Greinke in their head-to-head matchup and some might even say that deGrom is having the better season, although it is hard to argue against a 1.37 ERA.

Despite the fact that it will be difficult to top Greinke or Max Scherzer in the NL Cy Young race, deGrom deserves to be on every voter's short list of potential candidates. He has proven this season that he is capable of being one of the best pitchers in baseball, dodging a dreaded sophomore slump and following up his Rookie of the Year campaign with an even more impressive season. In the process, he has helped carry an anemic Mets offense into a legitimate race for the NL East title.

Not bad for a guy who did not pitch competitively until his junior year of college.
