Final Score: Mets 4, Padres 0—Syndergaard nearly perfect

Thor's hammer befuddled the Padres as the Mets took the opening game of the series.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Noah Syndergaard was perfect through six innings and the Mets chipped in enough run support to propel them to a 4-0 win over the Padres. Syndergaard was cruising until a Will Venable single up the middle broke things up in the seventh. Syndergaard stayed focused, however, inducing a pop up and double play ground ball after a Ruben Tejada error to maintain the shutout. He then struck out the last two batters he faced in the eighth inning, ending his night with nine strikeouts, no walks, and only three hits allowed.

New Met Tyler Clippard came in to close out the game, gave up a double to the first batter he faced, but then induced some of his trademark weak contact to finish the Padres off.

Lucas Duda and Curtis Granderson each hit two-run home runs to provide more than enough offense for the Mets tonight. Juan Uribe had a hit in his first start, and Juan Lagares had a pinch hit double in the eighth inning in front of Granderson's home run. All in all, a great game for the Mets.
