Johnny "Money" Monell was the unlikeliest of heroes tonight, as he broke a scoreless tie in the ninth inning with a clutch two-run double. The Mets notched their second shutout in a row on a West Coast trip that has been a pleasant surprise thus far.
Jon Niese threw eight shutout innings and needed just 81 pitches to do it. He struck out four, walked two, and allowed three hits, none of which went for extra bases. The Giants pounded pitch after pitch into the ground, and the Mets' infield did well in support of their starting pitcher.
With none out in the ninth inning, Monell ripped a double to right field against Santiago Casilla to drive in Michael Cuddyer and Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Juan Lagares singled home Monell shortly thereafter to provide some insurance that wasn't needed. Jeurys Familia tossed a dominating bottom of the ninth inning to clinch it.
Giants starter Chris Heston continued his domination of the Mets, pitching 7.1 scoreless innings tonight in a strong encore to his no-hitter at Citi Field last month. It wasn't enough, though, and the Giants have now lost seven in a row. Let's make it eight on Tuesday.
