Baseball America includes Mets prospects Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo on midseason top 50

Baseball America has released its midseason list of baseball’s top 50 prospects, and the list includes Mets prospects Michael Conforto at 14 and Brandon Nimmo at 48.

Conforto has skyrocketed up the board in his first full professional season. Coming into 2015, Conforto was ranked as the number 80 prospect in Baseball America’s top 100. But the young outfielder has been putting up huge numbers in his time between Single-A and Double-A this year. Since he was promoted to Binghamton, Conforto is hitting .313/.397/.492 with three home runs in 146 plate appearances. Jeff Paternostro wrote about Conforto after seeing him recently:

So Conforto offers some bat control and some pop, but what really makes him a potential offensive force in the majors is the approach. It makes the whole package play up. This isn't just strike zone control, though Conforto is good at recognizing pitches and recognizing strikes. He takes major-league-quality at-bats. There is both an approach and a plan. He is active even when taking a pitch and will zone a fastball and look to do some damage.

While Conforto  has shot up the boards this season, Nimmo actually slid down a few spots since his initial ranking heading into the season. Before the year, BA ranked Nimmo the 45th-best prospect in the game. Jeff wrote about what he thought Nimmo’s future in the majors would entail.

I do wonder how much Nimmo's approach plays against major league pitching, especially lefties. I think he's a guy who helps a major league ball club, and has some years where he's an everyday guy, but mixes in a few seasons where he frustrates the heck out of you.

Both Nimmo and Conforto were first-round picks for the Mets. Conforto was selected by the Mets with the 10th overall pick of the 2014 draft out of Oregon State, and the 22-year-old Nimmo was taken 13th overall out of East High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the 2011 draft.
