This Week in Mets Quotes: Nationals' thoughts on the Mets, Phillies' thoughts on the Mets

Lots of interesting, funny, idiotic, and insightful things were said by the Mets—and about them—recently. Here are some of our favorites.

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Thank you, Sandy Alderson.

"Thank you, Sandy Alderson!" -Young Mets Fan after Sandy Alderson signed a ball at the boys request [New York Times]

So everyone good with Verr-Ant Man…no, yeah, never mind.

"It’s kind of funny, I joked with Matt [Harvey] the other day, I said, ‘Why is everybody freaking out, don’t they know I’m a way better pitcher than you are?’" -Logan Verrett [New York Post]

Good to have Wright quotes back.

"I had to be careful, I almost pulled a Wilmer Flores out there. You try to keep your emotions in check." -David Wright [New York Post]

Pretty sure this was also TC’s reaction earlier in the season when he saw the bench was Eric Campbell, Danny Muno and Darrell Ceciliani.

"My God." -Terry Collins reaction when looking for a pinch hitter after the Mets already scored 16 runs and having to choose between Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson, Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson [New York Times]

Just another example that Warthen is good at his job.

"After the first inning Dan [Warthen] and I got together. He told me to use my secondary pitches. The use of the changeup was the key today after that first inning." -Bartolo Colon [New York Post]

Knowing your teammates will get the job done isn’t helping Eric O'Flaherty.

"I haven’t been putting pressure on myself to get the job done, because I know other guys in the lineup will and are. It works out. The less pressure you put on yourself, the more success you’re going to have." -Michael Cuddyer [New York Post]

Agreed.

"What happened to me was the craziest thing I've ever seen in baseball." -Wilmer Flores [Newsday]

Venezuelan Smack Talk.

"It's really fun being here right now. Even though we're in Philadelphia, it feels like we're playing in New York." -Wilmer Flores [Newsday]

Times sure have changed since the ‘where’s my ring’ offseason.

"I really don’t care [about how the Mets are playing.] We’ve got to win games to stay with what we’re doing. If we don’t win, it really doesn’t matter. We’ve just got to keep winning ballgames. If something happens and we don’t make it, it’s part of the game. We’ve just got to keep playing hard and play till the end." -Bryce Harper [New York Times]

Probably should have included a no offense to my teammates Scherzer, Zimmerman and Strasburg but…

"We’ve got a great starting staff, but you’re talking three premier starters. When you have those guys going, you only need a couple runs to really feel good about it. Those were fun games; it’s a completely different atmosphere up there for them, with their fan base. But you’re talking about three premier guys." -Drew Storen [New York Times]

I heard enough, suspend Span for the rest of the pennant race for gambling.

"Why not? We’ve been here before. The two years I’ve been here, coming down the stretch, this is where we’ve been. We came up short in 2013, but the year before we won the division, and last year we won the division. So if I had money — which I do — then I would put money on us." -Denard Span [New York Times]

True Story: I have a bottle opener made from one of EYJ’s game used bat.

"My initial reaction was, ‘Oh, okay, they kind of missed me!’" -Eric Young Jr. [Sportsblog]

This is solid life advice.

"I always say that it’s important to treat people with respect and leave on a good note because you just never know what could happen in the future and you have to keep those lines open. And here I am now returning to the Mets. It’s a reminder about why it’s important to leave on a good note." -Eric Young Jr. [Sportsblog]

Nah I’m going to go with strong on this one.

"Weak." -Larry Bowa on Murphy’s "bat flip" [Philly.com]

Conversely, they’re called the Fightin’ Phils for a reason.

"Just a coach who's trying to protect his players. You've got a competitive organization. They're not called the Fightin' Phils for no reason." -Travis d’Arnaud [Newsday]

I imagine Frenchy smiles while cursing.

"Let the guy step in the box. That's all I ask. We saw [Jeurys] Familia quick pitch, but the guy was ready. LaTroy [Hawkins] did it to me earlier this year in Toronto. Ruffy [Darin Ruf] had one foot in the box [in the seventh]. That's chicken [shit]. That's what it is. I never met the guy and I have no problem with him. Let the guy get in the box. And if they can't understand why we are upset with that … it had nothing to do with anything else. I had no problem with the way those guys played. They played hard. They are a great baseball team. I've got a lot of buddies on that team. My whole thing is to give the guy time because that's bull [shit]." -Jeff Francoeur [Newsday]

‘Larry reacted’ might be a bit of an understatement.

"Larry [Bowa] just got a little bit aggravated because it happened two days in a row. Same pitcher. It's a legal play and there's nothing wrong with it. But the umpire's got to make sure that the batter is ready in the box because you can get hurt. Rupp just got his hand on the bat [Monday] and the pitch was on its way. So you've just got to be careful with it. Larry reacted." -Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin [Newsday]

‘Larry went like Larry is’ sums it up about right…

"I saw a quick pitch and Larry went like Larry is. He's pretty intense. I just said until they make the pitch illegal, you can do it. I see it all the time." –Mets non-iterim manager Terry Collins [Newsday]

…as well as this.

"I don't know what that was about [screaming at Murphy]. I think he just got mad at everybody." -Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin [Newsday]

SiteBot FacePalm of the Week

"I'm excited [about Wright’s return] but the pessimist in me wants to point out that he didn’t have a single XBH in his rehab (I think)." -Jaywise

AA Qoute of the Week

"If it has every right to be in baseball, then traditionalist retaliation has every right to be in baseball." -Make Mine Metropolitans

"That's horseshit. Intentionally hurting people with a 90+ mph projectile because they hurt your feelings is a dumbass way of going about this." -xgamblorx
