Final Score: Mets 5, Red Sox 4—Back in the winning groove

In a see-saw game, the Mets came out on top.

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets beat the Red Sox 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field, which guarantees they'll at least start play tomorrow with a 5.5 game lead in the National League East. The Mets scored first on a Noah Syndergaard single in the second inning but fell behind when Syndergaard gave up a two-run home run to David Ortiz in the sixth.

The Mets answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run Juan Uribe double and an Anthony Recker single. The Red Sox scored twice in the seventh, however, against Syndergaard and Hansel Robles, thanks in part to a bad play by Michael Cuddyer in left field. But Cuddyer drove in the Mets' fifth and final run in the bottom of the eighth, and Jeurys Familia worked through a tough ninth to preserve the win, ending the game with a strikeout on a 100 mile per hour fastball.
