The Mets beat the Phillies 3-1 behind an excellent start by Bartolo Colon and home runs from Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson. Colon pitched eight fantastic shutout innings. He struck out nine, walked just one, and rarely faced much of a threat. And he handled several ground balls hit his well with ease.
On top of that, Colon took part in the Mets' three-run fifth inning. Michael Conforto hit an opposite-field home run to put the Mets on the board, and later in the inning, Colon smoked a single to center field to set up Granderson's two-run home run. That proved to be the difference in the game, as Jeurys Familia got into a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the ninth but allowed just one run thanks to a ground ball double play and a game-ending swinging strikeout.
