Final Score: Mets 5, Marlins 1—Four-run eighth puts Mets ahead for good

Jon Niese pitched well, and the Mets put together a big inning late to win.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets beat the Marlins 5-1 this evening in Miami behind a strong start by Jon Niese, a big hit by Ruben Tejada, and a breakout four-run eighth inning that put the team ahead for good. That eighth inning featured a whole lot of bad strategy and a whole lot of good results, with Eric Campbell driving in the eventual game-winning run before Juan Lagares tripled in two more runs and Curtis Granderson doubled in the fifth.

Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia weren't flawless in an inning apiece, but they each threw a scoreless frame to finish off the victory. That's five in a row for the first-place Mets.
