Though Noah Syndergaard was brilliant for the majority of his start, home runs from Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann sunk the Mets, 5-0. Syndergaard allowed three runs within the first three batters of the game, then cruised until the McCann home run in the sixth. He finished with eight strikeouts and no walks in six innings, and was certainly victimized by some poor sequencing and soft hits.
Offensively, the Mets had some opportunities, most notably when they loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. David Wright and Juan Uribe both struck out to end the threat. In the ninth, the Mets put two men on with two outs, but Andrew Miller got pinch hitter Travis d'Arnaud to ground out to end the game.
The Mets' magic number remains at eight, pending the result of the Nationals' game with the Marlins this afternoon.
