The Mets beat the Nationals for the third time in as many nights, completing a series sweep that leaves Washington seven games back in the National League East. Jacob deGrom gave up a couple of runs in his seven-inning start, and aside from a solo home run by Travis d'Arnaud, the Mets were dominated by Stephen Strasburg.
But Strasburg cracked a bit in the eighth inning, when Kelly Johnson—pinch-hitting for Wilmer Flores—hit a game-tying home run. One hit later, the Nationals pulled Strasburg for Drew Storen, and Yoenis Cespedes hit a magnificent home run against him to put the Mets ahead for good.
Tyler Clippard allowed a solo home run to Bryce Harper—his second of the night—in the bottom of the eighth, but the Mets scored an insurance run in the ninth before Jeurys Familia threw a perfect ninth to finish the sweep.
