Mets vs. Giants Recap: Bummer

Thor was great, but it wasn’t enough

MLB: NL Wild Card-San Francisco Giants at New York Mets Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets ended their 2016 season in a heartbreaking fashion tonight, lossing 3-0 to the Giants in the National League Wild Card game. Despite amazing pitching, the Mets' offense was sluggish and one great swing changed the course of the game.

Noah Syndergaard was simply great tonight. Across seven innings, he gave up two hits, walked three, and struck out ten. He never had more than 2 men on base, and looked every bit the ace Mets fans know him to be. He had a no-hitter going until the sixth inning, when Denard Span broke up the bid. Syndergaard gave up no runs, and gave all of us hope for a time.

Sadly, the Mets bats inspired no such confidence. Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner pitched a complete game shutout, stymying the Mets at every turn. He gave up four hits and two walks, striking out six.

Synergaard was relieved in the eighth by Addison Reed who, despite loading the bases on a hit and two walks (one intentional), got out of the inning unscathed with a strikeout to the Giants' feral outfielder, Hunter Pence.

Jeurys Familia would not be so lucky.

After giving up a leadoff double to Brandon Crawford, Familia struck out former Met Angel Pagan. He walked Joe Panik, and then gave up a home run to Conor Gillaspe, making the game 3-0 and out of reach for the Mets.

Look, with the amount of injuries the team suffered, and the periods of absolute offensive woe, it is still pretty incredible that the Mets made it to the postseason at all. But that doesn't make tonight sting any less. Maybe tomorrow.
