AAOP: There's a million things I haven't done, but just you wait!

The 2017 New York Mets: An American Musical

A voice saying, "Sandy you gotta fend for yourself!"

He started retreatin' and readin' every trade proposal on the shelf

There woulda been nothin' left to do for someone less astute

He woulda been dead or destitute

Without a cent of restitution

Started workin', clerkin' for his Mets Wilpon overlords

Tradin' Beltran and Bruce and all the things he can't afford

Screamin' for every pitcher he can get his hands on

Plannin' for the future see him now as he stands on

The bow of a ship, headed to a new land

In New York you can be a new man

In New York you can be a new man...

Trades (Okay, only one trade.)

Pardon me, are you Jay Bruce, sir?

That depends, who's asking?

Oh well sure, sir.

I'm Sandy Alderson, I'm at your service, sir.

I have been looking for you.

I'm getting nervous...

Trade Jay Bruce to the Baltimore Orioles for RHP Brad Brach (owed $2.9MM in arbitration next season).

The Orioles are going to be looking for a replacement for Trumbo and Jay Bruce may be much more successful at OPACY and in the AL East than he has been with the Mets. Brad Brach is coming off his best season and provides the Mets a much needed reliable arm in the bullpen. He is on the older side, but that's why I feel he is a fair return for Bruce.

Arbitration Guys

I am not throwing away my shot!

I am not throwing away my shot!

Hey yo, I'm just like my country

I'm young, scrappy, and hungry

And I'm not throwing away my shot!

Imma get one of those spots on the Mets roster

I probably shouldn't brag, but dag, I amaze and astonish!

Lucas Duda - $6.725MM

Addison Reed - $10.6MM

Matt Harvey - $5.2MM

Jeurys Familia - $8.7MM

Zack Wheeler - $1MM

Travis d'Arnaud - $1.7MM

Wilmer Flores - $1.9MM

Jacob deGrom - $4.5MM

Non-tender Rene Rivera and Josh Edgin.

Committed Salary

David Wright - $20MM

I may not live to see our glory

But I will gladly join the fight.

And when our children tell our story

They'll tell the story of tonight.

Neil Walker - $17.2MM, Asdrubal Cabrera - $8.25 MM, Curtis Granderson - $15MM

Work, work!

Neil Walker!

Work, work!

And Grandy!

The salaried brothers!

Jose Reyes - $500K, Juan Lagares - $4.5MM

Raise a glass to team speed...

For this to succeed, there is someone else we need...

Sign Cespedes to a 6 year/$150MM deal (23, 23, 27, 27, 25, 25)

Remember we made an arrangement when you went away

Now you're making me mad.

Remember, despite our estrangement, I'm your man.

You'll be back, soon you'll see

You'll remember you belong to me.

You'll be back, time will tell

You'll remember that I served you well.

Young stars rise, dynasties fall

We have seen each other through it all.

And when push comes to shove

I will send you giant bags of money to remind you of my love!

Existing Mets making league minimum

Noah Syndergaard - $500K

Hansel Robles - $500K

Michael Conforto - $500K

We're not falling behind or running late

We're not standing still

We are lying in wait

The Mets face an endless uphill climb

We have something to prove

We have nothing to lose

We have a lot of pitchers coming off surgery...

Steven Matz - $500K

Robert Gsellman - $500K

Jacob deGrom (arbitration)

Matt Harvey (arbitration)

Look at where you are

Look at where you started

The fact that you're alive is a miracle

Just stay alive, that would be enough

And if this staff

Shares a fraction of your talent

Or a fragment of your arms

Look out world, that would be enough!

Meanwhile, Wheeler's just over here like...

We will have Gsellman as a swing man in the pen that can make starts in the event of an injury/injuries and Lugo will stay stretched out in AAA. Given our other depth (Ynoa, Montero, etc.), we should be okay SP wise, but I would not be against taking a flier on someone on a minor league deal.

Brandon Nimmo - $500K

Josh Smoker - $500K

After trading Jay Bruce, Nimmo fills out the outfield and provides a platoon mate for Juan Lagares. I think that Josh Smoker showed me enough last year that he deserves a shot on the team this year. The bullpen could definitely use someone left-handed.

We wanna be in the room where it happens!

A quick ode to Terry Collins' last year...

Though in reviewing the incidents of my administration, I am unconscious of internal error, I am nevertheless sensible of my defects to know that I may have committed many errors. I shall also carry with me the hope that my fanbase will view them with indulgence; and that after thirty-five years of my life dedicated to its service with an upright zeal, the faults of incompetence will be consigned to oblivion, as I myself must soon be to the mansions of rest. I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat in which I promise myself to realize the sweet enjoyment of partaking, in the midst of my fellow baseball fans, the benign influence of a good team under a good manager, the ever-favorite object of my heart, and the happy reward as I trust, of our mutual cares, labors, and dangers...

One last time...

Terry Collins is going home!

Sign Jerry Blevins to a 2 year/$8MM deal

Jeurys Familia, what a sorry affair

And they wrote it down right there!

Given the fact that Familia may be suspended for part of the year, making sure the bullpen is solid is even more important. Jerry Blevins was very solid for us last year and adds another lefty to the pen to complement Smoker. And he can be used to get both lefties and righties out.

Sign Alex Avila to a 1 year/$2.5MM deal

Yo. Ev'ry action has an equal, opposite reaction

Travis d'Arnaud shat the bed. I love the guy, but he's in traction.

Poor Kevin Plawecki? He's missing in action.

So now I'm facing

The catching market

With its own faction.

Matt Wieters is very attractive in the North. New Yorkers like his chances.

He's not very forthcoming on lower finances

Alex Avila: I guess the best, given the circumstances.

I really wanted to sign Matt Wieters. In fact, if it were up to me, that's what the Mets would do. But, I just couldn't make that work with the $140MM payroll constraint without making moves just to cut payroll that I thought would make the team worse in the end. So of the other free agent catchers, Avila was the one I felt was the best deal. He is coming off a pretty decent year and we really need an insurance policy in case Travis d'Arnaud turns out to be completely terrible again (or injured). I'm still on #TeamWieters, just couldn't do it for this contest.

Final Roster

NOTE: I think that pretty much all of our OFers can share time in CF, which is why I didn't assign strict OF positions. I felt that both Grandy and Conforto played there pretty cromulently last year in the few chances they had. We were very lucky with how healthy Grandy was last year (pretty much the one player we were lucky with regarding injuries), but he is another year older and may need frequent days off, so I see Lagares getting plenty of playing time, especially if Conforto continues to struggle next season.

Starting Rotation

Final payroll: $141.675MM

(Sorry that's a bit over. Pls don't be mad.)

Legacy. What is a legacy?

It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.

I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me.

New York Mets, you great unfinished symphony, you sent for me!

Now I'm the villain in your history

I was too dumb and blind to know

I should've known

I should've known

The world was wide enough for both Matt Wieters and Yo.
