Mets vs. Marlins: Video highlights from the Mets' 2-1 win Wednesday afternoon

Logan Verrett did an admirable job filling in for Jacob deGrom.

It was a battle between two young pitchers Wednesday afternoon, as Adam Conley faced off against Logan Verrett. For the Mets, offense was at a premium once again, but they did just enough to earn a 2-1 victory. An already overtaxed bullpen had to do some more heavy lifting, so Thursday's off day is a welcome respite as the team heads to Cleveland for a weekend series.

Logan Verrett got the start Wednesday in place of Jacob deGrom, and once again proved he is more than capable filling in when called upon. He pitched six scoreless innings and struck out six. The biggest threat was in the fourth, when Miami had runners on first and second with one out. Verrett then struck out Martin Prado and and Justin Bour to escape without any damage.

Verrett got help from some nifty defense played behind him in the form of Wilmer Flores. Wilmer made his major league debut at first Wednesday and turned a quick 3-6-3 double play in the third to get the speedy Dee Gordon at first.

For the Marlins, Adam Conley was just as effective, striking out a career high nine batters through six scoreless innings.

Once both starters were out of the game, it became a battle of the bullpens. Jim Henderson pitched into some trouble in the seventh, but a combination of Hansel Robles and Jerry Blevins were able to bail him, and the team, out of a bases-loaded jam.

Getting out of that jam proved to be huge, as Kevin Plawecki broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the inning. He was able to squeeze a single past a drawn-in infield and two runs scored.

The Marlins got one back in the eighth when Justin Bour singled off Jeurys Familia.

There was a scary moment earlier in the inning when Yoenis Cespedes jumped into the crowd attempting to catch a foul ball, but he was able to stay in the game.

Familia pitched a drama-free ninth and the Mets improved their record to 3-5, two games below .500.
