Steven Matz was outstanding, and the Mets scored early and often in a 6-0 victory in Cleveland this afternoon. Matz threw seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and two walks.
Michael Conforto got the scoring started by driving in a run with a double in the first, and Lucas drove in two more that inning with a single. Thanks in large part to Cleveland's outfield's inability to deal with the sun, the Mets scored three more runs in the second. Asdrubal Cabrera dropped a drag bunt with two outs to score Curtis Granderson, who reached on a triple that could have been caught but dropped because of the sun. Conforto doubled to score Cabrera, and Yoenis Cespedes doubled—on another ball that could have been caught but dropped because of the sun—to score Cabrera.
That was it for the Mets' scoring, but that was all they needed. Hansel Robles, Jerry Blevins, and Addison Reed combined to keep Cleveland off the board the rest of the way.
