Mets injury update: Yoenis Cespedes might return on Wednesday

The outfielder may be available to pinch hit tonight.

Manager Terry Collins told reporters before Tuesday's game that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has improved to the point where there is a "good chance" he returns to the lineup Wednesday in the series finale against the Reds. Collins also suggested that Cespedes might be available to pinch hit off the bench in Tuesday night's game.

Cespedes originally sustained the injury to his leg when he dove into the stands in an attempt to catch a foul ball at Citi Field. The original injury did not seem to bother him that much, as he went on to hit .286/.375/.612 after the collision with the seats in left field.

He re-aggravated the injury on a hard slide into second base Friday night at Turner Field. Cespedes initially stayed in the game, but he was removed after there was a rain delay in the eighth inning. He has not been in the lineup since Friday night but said Sunday he was feeling much better and yesterday had fluid drained from the bruise.

The absence of Cespedes has not affected the Mets' offense too much, as they have remained unbeaten since he left the lineup. A combination of Juan Lagares and Alejandro De Aza have been manning center in place of Cespedes.
