The Mets' offense struggled through six innings against Reds starter Brandon Finnegan, who had not allowed a run into the seventh inning. With one out in the seventh, Juan Lagares walked and Kevin Plawecki singled, which brought Cespedes to the plate as a pinch-hitter and the potential tying run. On the first pitch from the left-handed Finnegan, Cespedes smoked a ball over the left field wall tying the game at three.
The Mets took the lead after Curtis Granderson tripled and David Wright, who was having a rough night both in the field and at the plate, singled home the go-ahead run.
Bartolo Colon started the night and did not have his best stuff. The defense let him down early, which lead to a run in the third, and an inning later Colon gave up a two-run home run to Ivan De Jesus Jr.
Terry Collins went to his bullpen early, and it came up big again. Logan Verrett got his second win in two nights, and Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia both pitched clean innings to secure the 4-3 win.
