Not 24 hours after pounding Jake Peavy for 12 runs in an inning, the Mets hung six runs on Matt Cain to raise his season ERA from 6.43 to an even 7.00. Michael Conforto continued his assault on opposing pitchers from the three hole, going 3-for-3 off Cain and coming a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Jacob deGrom struggled with control in his second start since his return to the team from injury and the birth of his son, walking four, including once with the bases loaded. Still, the starter allowed just two hits and struck out five, giving up no earned runs in six innings. A Wilmer Flores error led to three-run third inning for San Francisco, though he atoned for his wild throw with a sixth-inning home run that would stand as the deciding run.
Addison Reed yielded two earned runs in a third of an inning, but a combination of Hansel Robles and Jerry Blevins helped fend the Giants off until Jeurys Familia came on in the ninth, inducing a double play in a scoreless frame.
