2016 Mets minor league preview: St. Lucie Mets (High-A)

A couple of the Mets' top position player prospects will start the year in St. Lucie.

As the minor league season gets underway this evening, the St. Lucie Mets, the Mets' High-A affiliate, have a pretty interesting roster, at least to start the season.

The manager

Luis Rojas is back managing the St. Lucie Mets for the second year. Before that, he managed the Mets' Single-A affiliate in Savannah. This is his tenth season in the Mets' system as a coach or manager, as he also managed the Gulf Coast League Mets before the managerial gig with Savannah and coached both of those teams before he became a manager.

He'll have pitching coach Marc Valdes, who held that role in Brooklyn in 2012 and 2013. Valdes replaces longtime Mets pitching coach Phil Regan, who is still with the team in Port St. Lucie as the coach for rehabbing pitchers. Val Pascucci, who played for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo in 2010 and 2011 and got a cup of coffee with the Mets late in the 2011 season before moving on to coaching, is St. Lucie's hitting coach. He spent the last two seasons in that role with Savannah.

Players to watch

The pitchers

After the graduations of several Mets pitching prospects and the team's trades in July and August last year, there aren't a ton of top-end pitching prospects left in the system. But Chris Flexen, drafted by the Mets in the 14th round in 2012, has a chance to reach that level of reputation this year. The 21-year-old spent split last season between Low-A Brooklyn and Single-A Savannah. In total, he had 2.42 ERA in 52 innings of work. The low innings total is the primary concern, as his single-season high as a professional is 69 innings, even though he has pitched as a starter almost exclusively.

As for the rest of the roster, it's not nobody here could break out. But the rest of the pitchers on our top 25 list for this year are either above or below St. Lucie or, in the case of Marcos Molina, spending the year on the disabled list.

The hitters

St. Lucie gets the Mets' top non-Steven Matz prospect, at least to start the year, in shortstop Amed Rosario. He's not expected to be there long; the Mets intend to move him to Double-A Binghamton a few weeks into the season. But he starts the year in Florida, and entering his age-20 season, he's one of the top players to watch in the Mets' system.

Beyond Rosario, the St. Lucie Mets have outfielder Wuilmer Becerra, who the Mets acquired with Noah Syndergaard and Travis d'Arnaud in the R.A. Dickey trade. He's one of the best position players in the Mets' system, and he ranked seventh on our top 25 list.

Jhoan Urena had a bit of a lost year in 2015, but he's one of the more exciting players on this team's roster. Shortstop Luis Guillorme starts here, too, and he's best known for his defensive work at the toughest position on the infield. Since Rosario is starting the year in St. Lucie, Guillorme probably won't see regular time at short until Rosario gets promoted to Binghamton, but he should be the regular at the position after that.

And from the team's website, here's the full roster:
