Steven Matz turned in one of the best starts of his young career as the Mets won the deciding game of this series with the Nationals, 2-0. The two teams have now split their six games on the season thus far, each taking two of three on the road.
The Mets took a lead on the second batter of the game, when David Wright hit a solo home run off of Washington starter Tanner Roark to give the Mets the early lead. Wright, who had the day off yesterday, would prove to be all the offense the Mets would need less than five minutes into the game.
From there, the next eight innings belonged to Steven Matz. In the longest start of his career, Matz never seemed to be struggling in the slightest. Aside from the second inning, when had two men on base, everything seemed to come pretty easily for the Long Island native today. He scattered four singles across his start, with the fourth coming in the eigth after shutting down 16 in a row. He had seven strike outs and just one walk on the day.
The Mets got an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Daniel Murphy, who has been really doing some damage to New York pitching so far this season, let a potential inning-ending double play ball get by him. The next batter was Rene Rivera, who singled home Matt Reynolds with the game's second, and final run.
Reynolds was in the game because Asdrubal Cabrera was scratched between the exchange of lineup cards and the bottom of the first with back spasms. Reports seem to indicate that he won't miss too much, if any, time.
Jeurys Familia came in to pitch the ninth, and promptly gave up singles to Jason Werth and Murphy, before striking out Ryan Zimmermann and then inducing ground balls from both Anthony Rendon and Wilson Ramos.
The Mets have tomorrow off before welcoming the Dodgers to town for 1986 weekend.
