The Mets defeated the Padres 4-3 on Sunday with Matt Harvey leading the way. He struck out ten Padres in six innings and the only two runs he gave up came with one swing of the bat by Christian Bethancourt. Some luck was on Harvey's side when Andrew Cashner was ruled out on a close play at the plate. Instant replay upheld the call on the field.
Eric Campbell and Asdrubal Cabrera gave the Mets a 2-0 lead with RBI hits in the second, and Yoenis Cespedes continued his home run tear with a blast in the third. Cabrera tacked on the fourth and final run with an RBI single in the sixth.
Antonio Bastardo did the heavy lifting of the day when he came on in relief with the bases loaded and no out. He got two strikeouts and a popup to end the rally and preserve the 4-3 lead. Jeurys Familia pitched a clean ninth to secure the victory. With the Nationals losing to the Cubs, the Mets now own a half-game lead for first place.
