The Mets lost the first game of a straight doubleheader in Pittsburgh by a 3-1 score this afternoon. Opposing pitcher and former Met Jon Niese threw seven scoreless innings, and Steven Matz worked hard to finish five innings. He gave up two runs in the process, and Antonio Bastardo gave up one more.
Logan Verrett kept it the game within reach with two scoreless innings of work. Curtis Granderson hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, but that was it for the Mets' scoring on the afternoon. It was a frustrating game to begin the doubleheader, but a win tonight could go a long way toward making things seem alright.
