Final score: Cubs 5, Mets 1—Cubs finally win a game against the Mets

The Mets lost to the Cubs for the first time in a long time.

MLB: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets lost to the Cubs in the first of three games at Wrigley Field by a 5-1 score, as Steven Matz wasn’t very good and Jon Lester was. Matz allowed a three-run home run to Anthony Rizzo in the third inning, and that alone would have been enough for Chicago to win the game.

Matz was charged with one more run in the sixth, an inning he started despite having thrown 93 pitches, after he allowed a double and was pulled in favor of Seth Lugo, who allowed a sac fly to Cubs catcher David Ross.

The Mets scored their lone run when Wilmer Flores hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, but the Cubs added their final run when Yoenis Cespedes, who had thrown out a runner at the plate earlier in the game, had a ball go through his legs as he tried to do the same thing on a two-out single in the eighth.
