In a laugher at Citi Field, the Mets beat the Cubs 14-3 to complete a four-game sweep, capped by a 6-for-6 game by Wilmer Flores. Jon Lester, the NL Player of the Month for June, was given an inhospitable introduction to July by the Mets’ suddenly explosive offense.
Lester had allowed just eight runs all month in June, but was chased from the game in the second inning after allowing eight runs and recording just four outs.
For his part, Noah Syndergaard was excellent, striking out eight and walking none in seven innings.
Flores—who joins Edgardo Alfonzo as the only Mets to go 6-for-6 in a game—will get most of the offensive attention, but the Mets’ entire lineup battered the Cubs for 22 hits, four walks, and 14 runs, including going 8-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
The sweep at the hands of the Nationals last week was a bitter pill to swallow, but sweeping the Best Team In Baseball in four straight takes a bit of the sting out. The Mets welcome the Marlins to Citi Field for a three-game series beginning on Monday.
