The Mets were clobbered by the Diamondbacks 9-0 in the final game of their series this afternoon. Noah Syndergaard pitched five interesting innings, striking out eight but allowing three runs. Jonathon Niese took over in the sixth inning and promptly torched the game, giving up six runs in an inning of work. That was effectively all she wrote, as Braden Shipley, the Diamondbacks’ top pitching prospect, shut down the Mets over seven strong innings, and the Arizona bullpen recorded a pair of scoreless innings to seal the deal.
The Mets’ offense was largely dormant. They put the first two men on base in the ninth, prompting Gary Cohen to quip that they were only six men away from bringing the tying run to the plate. A Wilmer Flores fly out and James Loney double play promptly crushed that last bit of hope.
The Mets will kick off a series against the Padres tomorrow at 7:10 PM.
