The Mets lost a grueling affair to the Cardinals Wednesday night by a score of 8-1. Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and struggled for his second consecutive start, lasting only 4.2 innings and giving up a whopping 12 hits, including three home runs. deGrom’s struggles began with the first batter he faced, when Matt Carpenter led off the game with a home run. His opposite number, Carlos Martinez, pitched eight innings on one-run ball against the Mets. Martinez ran a pedestrian 5-3 K-BB ratio, but the Mets only managed four hits against the Cardinals’ young flamethrower.

After deGrom departed in the fifth inning, Erik Goeddel bailed him out of that inning. Goeddel lasted until the seventh inning, when he allowed two runs and was replaced by Hansel Robles, who gave up a run of his own in the eighth inning.
