Steven Matz is scheduled to return to the Mets’ rotation on Thursday, September 1. After throwing a bullpen session yesterday, Matz will throw a follow up before his return. Matz was originally believed ready to return for a start on Wednesday, but instead it appears the team will slightly delay Matz’s activation from the disabled list by pushing up Bartolo Colon’s next start to Wednesday.
With another scheduled bullpen session, the team seems to be making sure Matz is truly healthy before putting him back on the mound. Matz has been dealing with a bone spur in his left elbow since late June and, more recently, a strained shoulder and irritated rotator cuff that sent him to the DL. From the beginning of his DL stint, the team was optimistic Matz would miss the minimum 15 days before returning.
The Mets are about to begin an important four-game series against the Marlins, with Miami a game ahead of New York in the Wild Card race. With Matz now set to go Thursday, he will start the final game of the important series.
