Final Score: Mets 5, Marlins 2—Bart and bats do it again

Kelly Johnson’s three-run double lifts the Mets

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets beat the Marlins 5-2 Wednesday night, securing a crucial series victory against their Wild Card rivals. Bartolo Colon turned in seven strong innings, allowing only two runs with a very Colonesque three strikeouts and zero walks. Colon unfortunately did not manage to earn an oh-so-important win, as the Mets only scored two runs before his departure, both on a second inning Wilmer Flores two-run home run.

After Colon left the game, Addison Reed pitched a scoreless eighth inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Mets rallied against Marlins closer A. J. Ramos, who had neither his command nor his velocity. Ramos allowed a single and two walks before Kelly Johnson belted a two-out bases-clearing double down the right field line.

Jeurys Familia recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth. In doing so, he set a new Mets club record for saves in a season with 44. Seeing as we have a whole month of baseball left, Familia should have time to pad his record.
