Final Score: Tigers 4, Mets 3—Syndergaard falls short in marquee matchup

The Tigers beat the Mets by a final score of 4-3. This game was touted as a top-notch pitching matchup between Justin Verlander and Noah Syndergaard. Unfortunately for the Mets, Noah Syndergaard stumbled in the fourth inning when he was handed the lead.

Kelly Johnson hit his second home run in as many nights in the top of the fourth. This was a two-run shot that put the Mets in front by a score of 2-1.

Syndergaard met trouble right away in the bottom of the inning when Miguel Cabrera led off with a single and Victor Martinez followed with a no-doubter of a home run. J.D. Martinez then sent a well-hit ball to right that Jay Bruce played well. That led to a close play at second that went unchallenged by manager Terry Collins. Martinez ended up scoring the third run of the inning to make the score 4-2.

Justin Verlander had no such issues making the lead stand up. He allowed one more baserunner after the Johnson home run. His final line was six innings, nine strikeouts, and just those two runs.

Syndergaard’s final line wasn’t terrible as he too went six innings and struck out seven, with most of the damage coming in the fourth. However, there were several long at-bats where he had trouble putting the hitter away. Granted this is a talented, deep Tigers lineup, but Syndergaard did not seem like the dynamic pitcher with the overpowering stuff he was earlier in the season.

The Mets tacked on a run against former Met Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth, but the deficit was too much for this offense to overcome.
