News broke shortly after the Mets’ loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night that the team had optioned rookie outfielder Brandon Nimmo back to Triple-A Las Vegas. Nimmo was last recalled from the minors on August 4 when Yoenis Cespedes went on the disabled list. Since then, he’s played in just one game, going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts in Detroit last Friday night.

No corresponding roster move has been announced yet, but it looks like the mystery player is coming from the Las Vegas roster.

Although Nimmo has had his moments as a major league player this year, he hasn’t played well enough to stand out on a New York roster that is loaded with left-handed hitting outfielders. Even with Cespedes on the shelf, the Mets still have Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson, Michael Conforto, and Alejandro De Aza to turn to.

Nimmo is hitting .237/.297/.288 with one home run in 64 plate appearances for the Mets this season. He’s sure to get more playing time when he’s back in Las Vegas.
