The Mets defeated the Phillies today 17-0, finishing up their final homestand of the regular season with a bang. After a weekend of sub-par starting pitching, Robert Gsellman threw a gem—seven innings, eight strikeouts, two walks, and only three hits. He was relieved by Fernando Salas, who struck out the side in the eighth, and Jerry Blevins pitched a perfect ninth.
But the real story of the day was the offense. Highlighted by an Asdrubal Cabrera grand slam, the team was firing on all cylinders this afternoon. The game was such a laugher that three runs came in without the Mets swinging a bat, and that, alone, would have been enough offense for this afternoon.
Curtis Granderson hit his 30th home run of the season, Michael Conforto hit a pinch-hit two-run double, hell, even Eric Campbell drove in a couple of runs. Six pitchers threw for the Phillies today, and all gave up at least one run. After a near comeback last night, the Mets looked as strong and confident as they have all season today.
Tomorrow, the Mets travel to Miami for a three-game set against the Marlins.
